A competitor social media dataset records observed items with stable identifiers, collection dates, source fields and transparent gaps.

Competitor social media analytics depends on inclusion rules; a comparison can change simply because one account or content type was collected differently.

Start with a collection contract

A competitor social dataset is a record of observed content and available metrics for a defined group of accounts. Its usefulness depends on coverage and traceability before it depends on size. Write a contract naming the accounts, platforms, content types, date window, required fields and permitted collection method. A dataset created for publication cadence does not automatically answer questions about audience sentiment or campaign revenue.

Separate the publication period from the retrieval period. The first determines which posts belong in the cohort. The second records when the analyst found them and observed their counters. Include a timezone and a rule for boundary timestamps. Without this distinction, a later refresh can appear to change historical performance simply because more interactions accumulated. Keep the original snapshot available within the approved retention arrangements.

Give every row a stable identity

Use platform and source identifier together as the content key. A URL is useful for inspection, but redirects and tracking parameters can produce several URLs for one item. Preserve the original observed URL and, where supported, a stable canonical reference. Keep account identity in a separate account table so regional names and handle changes do not create accidental duplicates.

The YouTube Data API: video resource [1] describes video identifiers, publication information and statistics as different resource properties. This distinction suggests a practical schema: content identity, publication metadata, observation metadata and metric fields. Verify each requested field through the chosen access method. Do not infer unavailable measures from another field just to make a spreadsheet column complete.

Maintain a short field dictionary. It should explain units, source names, whether a count is cumulative, transformation rules and missing-value treatment. For a manually assigned topic, include the coding rule and reviewer status. A new analyst should be able to tell which values came from the source and which were added during analysis without reading the collector's code or remembering an informal discussion.

Record gaps as evidence

Maintain a collection log by account and date range. Record successful pages or requests, failures, unavailable content and any known restrictions. A completed script run is not proof of completed coverage. Compare the collected cohort with the accessible publication inventory when possible and inspect discontinuities. Large gaps may reflect genuine inactivity, a retrieval limit or an account identity error; investigate before calling them quiet periods.

The YouTube Data API: search results [2] documents result filters and pagination for its retrieval method. A set of search results should be labeled according to the query and method used. Query results are not interchangeable with a verified inventory of everything an account published. If complete enumeration is unavailable, narrow the research claim to the observed sample and explain how items entered that sample.

Use explicit missing reasons, such as not exposed, retrieval failed, deleted since first observation or not applicable to this format. These reasons have different implications. Keep zero only for a source-reported zero or another justified observation. Turning failures into zeros can make one competitor appear systematically weaker and conceal the collection problem that caused the apparent difference.

Worked example: a publication cohort

This hypothetical example uses invented accounts and counts. An analyst needs all public videos published by three selected channels during September. A first collection returns 11, 9 and 6 videos. The six-video channel has a two-week gap that conflicts with its accessible account inventory. The analyst checks the retrieval log and finds that a pagination step failed. The report stays provisional while the missing page is resolved.

After an authorized retry, that channel has 10 videos in the cohort. One unavailable item remains in a separate gap record because its metadata cannot be verified. The analyst does not invent its subject or metrics. The final coverage note states that 30 accessible videos were observed, identifies the unresolved item and explains whether excluding it affects the planned cadence analysis.

Two snapshots of a video show 400 and 450 likes. Those become two observation rows linked to one content record, rather than two posts. The later count is used for a clearly dated cumulative comparison. If the analyst calculates growth, the interval and both snapshots remain visible. The dataset now supports its defined question without confusing content duplication with changing metrics.

Use a dataset acceptance checklist

  • Confirm account identity, intended region and account purpose for every peer.
  • Verify the inclusion window and timezone against boundary examples.
  • Reconcile content keys and inspect duplicate URLs before aggregation.
  • Preserve observation timestamps and original source field names.
  • Review missing reasons and unresolved retrieval failures by account.
  • Sample source links, publication dates and manually coded categories.
  • Attach the field dictionary and coverage note to the analytical export.

Set acceptance rules according to the question. A topic exploration may remain useful with a documented sample. A claim about total publication frequency requires stronger inventory reconciliation. Do not use an arbitrary completion percentage to make an incomplete sample look representative. If the denominator is unknown, report the observed count and the known gaps without manufacturing a completeness rate.

Data handling also deserves deliberate scope. Public discussion can contain personal information. The NIST Privacy Framework [3] describes a voluntary framework for managing privacy risk. Apply your organization's approved handling rules to source text, comments and exports; retain only what the research needs. A source being visible in a browser does not make unlimited redistribution the purpose of this dataset.

Maintain versions and state the limitations

Save collection method, field dictionary and dataset version together. When a query, account list or metric definition changes, issue a new version and explain the consequence for comparisons. Correct errors transparently rather than overwriting the only evidence of what the team previously reported. Restrict raw records as appropriate and share a lighter analytical table when recipients do not need source text.

The dataset cannot establish unseen paid distribution, private messages, owner-only analytics or business outcomes. It may also lose source accessibility when content changes or disappears. Keep those limits attached to downstream charts. Otherwise a careful dataset can become an overconfident presentation simply because its coverage note was dropped during export.

Geographic context is also separate from dataset completeness. The World Bank: Individuals using the Internet (% of population) [4] reports internet use at population level. It can help explain why an observed online sample should not be described as an entire market, but it does not measure platform participation or supply a correction factor for missing competitor posts.

Frequently asked questions

Should deleted posts be removed from every version?

Distinguish the historical observation from current accessibility. Follow applicable retention and platform requirements. Where retained records are permitted, note the later unavailability rather than silently rewriting the historical cohort or presenting the source as still inspectable.

Can missing metrics be replaced with zero?

Only when zero is actually supported by the source or method. An unavailable field should remain unavailable with a reason. Separate those rows when calculating totals or rates and explain the affected denominator.

What is the minimum documentation to share?

Share the account scope, dates, observation timing, field definitions, counting rules, missing-value policy and material gaps. Include source references for important findings. These notes let a recipient judge what the dataset can support before using it in a comparison.
